What is the book about?
Can You Keep A Secret? is a chick-lit novel written by British author Sophie Kinsella, released in 2003. The story follows Emma Corrigan, a girl in her twenties who works in public relations and has a major secret: she can’t keep anything to herself. After spilling her secrets to a stranger on a plane during a turbulent flight, she is convinced that he is going to expose her to the world. But when they meet again under unlikely circumstances, it turns out that he may be the one person she can trust with her secrets after all. Can You Keep A Secret? is a funny and heartwarming novel about the importance of friendship, love, and learning to accept yourself for who you are.
What are the main themes?
There are several themes that are explored in Can You Keep A Secret? by Sophie Kinsella. The first is the theme of secrets and how they can both help and harm relationships. The second is the theme of trust and whether it is possible to truly trust someone with your deepest secrets. The third is the theme of friendship and how it can be tested by secrets and trust.
What did I think of the book?
Well, I didn’t love it. I found the protagonist to be somewhat unlikeable and the plot wasn’t reallyGrabbing me. That said, I thought the writing was good and the ending was fairly interesting. Overall, it’s a decent read but not one of my favorites.
The characters
There are three narrators in Can You Keep A Secret?: Emma, Jack and,”the third person” who is never given a name. Emma is the protagonist and the story is told from her point of view. We are first introduced to her as she is about to board a plane. She is nervous about flying and thinks about all of the things that could go wrong. When the plane starts to experience some turbulence, Emma begins to panic and tells her biggest secret to the stranger sitting next to her, Jack.
Jack is a successful businessman who seems to have everything going for him. He is confident and charming and Emma finds herself attracted to him. As the story progresses, we learn that Jack is not as perfect as he seems and that he has some secrets of his own.
The third person narrator is omniscient and gives us insight into the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters, not just Emma. This allows us to understand the motivations behind their actions.
The ending
The novel ends with Emma finally telling her best friend, Tyler, her deepest secret – that she is in love with him and has been for years. While Tyler is shocked at first, he soon reciprocates Emma’s feelings and the two share a kiss. They agree to keep their relationship a secret from their other friends for now, knowing that it will be difficult to keep it hidden but feeling that it is worth it.
Overall thoughts
If you’re in the market for a light, easy read with a bit of suspense and a likeable protagonist, Can You Keep A Secret? is the book for you. While it’s not the most psychologically deep or thrilling novel you’ll ever read, it’s perfect for a beach day or rainy afternoon.
The story follows Emma Corrigan, a slightly insecure but otherwise normal woman in her early thirties, who has a life-changing encounter with a handsome stranger on a turbulent flight from Scotland to London. In the course of their conversation, she confides all of her deepest, darkest secrets to him – only to discover upon landing that he is actually Jack Harper, the CEO of the marketing firm where she works.
As their relationship develops and the line between professional and personal starts to blur, Emma begins to worry that her secrets will be exposed. At the same time, she can’t help but be impressed by Jack’s candor and openness, which are in stark contrast to her own guarded nature.
Can You Keep A Secret? is an entertaining novel that explores the question of whether it’s ever truly possible to know someone – even (or especially) those closest to us. If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh, cry, and reminisce about your own secrets and friendships, this is definitely one to add to your reading list.
Would I recommend it?
If you’re looking for a fun, quick read, I would definitely recommend CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET? by Sophie Kinsella. It’s the perfect beach read – funny, romantic, and a little bit naughty.
Emma Corrigan is a young woman with a lot of secrets. Some are small secrets, like the fact that she once accidentally flashed her boss on the Tube. Others are big secrets, like the fact that she’s desperately in love with her best friend, who just happens to be dating someone else. When Emma is seated next to a handsome stranger on a plane and spills her life story to him in the span of six hours, she figures she’ll never see him again – so it won’t matter if he knows everything about her. But then Emma’s life takes a strange turn when that same stranger shows up at her office … as her new boss.
