Introduction
A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of epic fantasy novels by the American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. He began the first volume of the series, A Game of Thrones, in 1991, and it was published in 1996. Martin, who initially envisioned the series as a trilogy, has published five out of a planned seven volumes. The fifth and most recent volume of the series, A Dance with Dragons, was published in 2011 and took Martin six years to write. He is currently writing the sixth novel, The Winds of Winter.
A Song of Ice and Fire takes place on the fictional continents Westeros and Essos and chronicles the power struggles among noble families for control of the Iron Throne of Westeros. It interweaves several plot lines with a large cast of characters, including themes such as dynasty; marriage alliances; political intrigue; corruption; betrayal; supernatural elements such as prophecy, witchcraft, giants, dragons, zombies; as well as military conflicts such as rebellions and wars.
Summary of the story
In A Song of Ice and Fire, Westeros is a land where summers span years and winters can last a lifetime. The series chronicles the time between the last year of a long summer and the first year of an equally long winter. The story begins with the disappearance of Lord Eddard Stark’s heir, Bran, who falls from a window in the family’s castle. This prompts an investigation by Lord Stark, who uncovers a plot by his wife Cersei to murder Robert Baratheon, her husband and Eddard’s cousin and friend. Fleeing for his life, Eddard goes into hiding with his family while Jon Snow, his bastard son, joins the Night’s Watch on the Wall to defend Westeros from the wildlings beyond. Cersei seizes control in King’s Landing following Robert’s death, while Robb Stark raises an army to confront her.
Throughout A Song of Ice and Fire various forces vie for control of Westeros: Eddard’s daughters Sansa and Arya are held captive in King’s Landing by Cersei while Robb leads his army against her; Daenerys Targaryen breaks free of slavery in Essos and attempts to reclaim her birthright as queen; Jon Snow becomes involved withthe wildlings beyond the Wall; and tyrion Lannister fights for survival amidst scheming in King’s Landing. The series culminates with all-out war as several factions lay claim to Westeros following the death of King Robert Baratheon.

Themes
The Song of Ice and Fire book series is renowned for its complex characters, gritty realism, and unapologetic violence. But above all else, the books are known for their themes. Themes of love and loss, war and peace, betrayal and loyalty, good and evil. All of these themes are interwoven throughout the series, creating a rich tapestry of story that is unmatched in fantasy literature.
George R.R. Martin is the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. The series has been adapted into the wildly popular HBO show, Game of Thrones.
Martin was born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. He is the oldest of three children. His father was a longshoreman and his mother a homemaker.
Martin attended Marist High School, where he developed an interest in science fiction and fantasy literature. He went on to attend Northwestern University, where he earned a B.A. in journalism in 1970.
After graduation, Martin took a job as a journalist with The Santa Fe New Mexican, but he continued to pursue his writing career on the side. His first published story appeared in Galaxy Magazine in 1971.
In 1976, Martin moved to Hollywood to work on television projects such as The Twilight Zone and Beauty and the Beast. However, his true passion was always for writing novels.
In 1991, he finally achieved success with the release of his novel A Game of Thrones, which was the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.Since then, Martin has released five more installments in the series: A Clash of Kings (1998), A Storm of Swords (2000), A Feast for Crows (2005), A Dance with Dragons (2011), and The Winds of Winter (forthcoming).
The television adaptation of Martin’s books, Game of Thrones, premiered on HBO in 2011 and has become one of the most popular shows on television. It has earned numerous awards, including multiple Emmys and a Golden Globe.
The seventh and final season of Game of Thrones is set to air in 2019.
The books
The A Song of Ice and Fire book series is comprised of five novels, released in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005. The fifth and most recent novel in the series is still incomplete, with author George RR Martin having released four (of what he intends to be seven) chapters from the sixth book online.
The first book in the series is titled A Game of Thrones, with the subsequent books being titled A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows and finally (for now) A Dance With Dragons. All five books have been released in paperback form, with the hardback versions currently out of print.
The story is set in a fantasy world reminiscent of medieval Europe, with a number of well-developed cultures and characters. Whilst there are no explicit supernatural elements in the story, magic does exist – although it is a rare and unpredictable thing.
The novels have been extremely successful, both commercially and critically. They have sold millions of copies worldwide and have been translated into many different languages. The television series Game of Thrones – which aired its first season in 2011 – is based on the first novel in the series.
