American literature
American literature is literature written or produced in the United States of America and its preceding colonies (for specific discussions of poetry and theater, see Poetry of the United States and Theater in the United States). Before the founding of the United States, the British colonies on the eastern coast of the present-day United States were heavily influenced by British literature. Consequently, American writers often borrowed from English authors. For example, James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans is based on Sir Walter Scott’s novel Ivanhoe. American writers also drew inspiration from native oral traditions. For example, Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is based on a story told by Twain’s boyhood friendTom Sawyer.
During the 19th century, many American writers wrote in aRealist style, which depicted life “as it really was.” Some of theseRealist writers were Bret Harte, William Dean Howells,Mark Twain, and Henry James. Other American writers wrotein a Naturalist style, which depicted life as controlled by lawsof nature and heredity. Some of these Naturalist writerswere Jack London, Stephen Crane, Theodore Dreiser, andFrank Norris.
American history

American novels
There is no one answer to this question, as there are many great American novels. However, some widely-acclaimed examples include To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.
American short stories
While short stories have been around since oral storytelling traditions, the American short story as we know it began to take shape in the early 19th century. Washington Irving was one of the first American authors to gain international acclaim with his collection of short stories The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., which includes such classics as “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Other important early contributors to the genre include Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Bret Harte.
The 20th century brought a new wave of American short story writers, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Pearl S. Buck, Katherine Anne Porter, John Steinbeck, Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, James Baldwin, and Lorraine Hansberry. In more recent years, the tradition has continued with the work of such contemporary masters as Raymond Carver, Tobias Wolff, Ann Beattie, Alice Munro, and Jamaica Kincaid.
American poetry
Poetry is a genre of literature that employs aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language—such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre—to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning.
American plays
Though there are many great American plays, some believe that the traditional American book is disappearing. According to a 2006 article in the Boston Globe, “In the last two decades, the number of books published by small and midsize presses has more than tripled” (McCrum 2006). This increase in small and midsize presses is likely due to the fact that fewer large presses are willing to take risks on new or experimental authors. As a result, American literature may be losing out on some great works.
American essays
American essays are a form of writing that originated in the United States. They are typically shorter than other essay forms, and they often focus on personal experience or opinion. American essays can be literary, personal, or political in nature.
American non-fiction
There are many different genres of American literature, but some of the most popular are non-fiction works.
